General Johnson made quite the name for himself during the early phases of the war, equipping a company of Maryland CS volunteers from his own pocket. Later, the group would become the nucleus of the famed 1st Maryland Infantry and 1st Maryland Battalion.
The image of Johnson is a well-known portrait shot, with no overt damage or wear. It is mounted to a typical card with a double-gold border pattern and “B Johnson” is written along the bottom edge in period ink. The reverse is largely clean, with small areas of vague discoloration. Written in pencil on the reverse are “BRADLEY TYLER JOHNSON” and “AL-80”. A stylized photographer logo stamp reads “Published by E & H.T. ANTHONY, 501 Broadway, New York. MANUFACTURERS of the best PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUMS.”
A assuredly rare image for the discerning Civil War collector. [cm] [ph:L]
