George’s residence was listed as San Francisco, CA when he enlisted on 2/20/1863 as a 22-year-old Sergeant. On 5/10/1863, he mustered into Company F of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. He was discharged for promotion on 3/22/1864 and was made 2nd Lieutenant of Company I. He was promoted again to 1st Lieutenant on 4/29/1865 and discharged from volunteer service on 9/8/1865.
The image of Lt. Wilson is mounted to a typical card with gold borders, in such a way to obscure the top edge. The Carte-de-Visite is in good condition overall, with very minor surface dirt along the low right edge. The reverse is clean, with a canceled 2-cent stamp, a penciled notation reading “Lt. GEORGE F. WILSON CO. I 5TH MASS. CAV.”, a back mark reading “Photographed by JUDKNIS, No. 10 Main Street, Haverhill, Mass.”, and a once pasted (no longer, but present and included) bearing the ink signature of Lt. Wilson.
A lovely image with a personal touch. Prefect for the collector of fine Civil War and Cavalry images. [cm] [ph:L]
