General Bayard had a stellar but brief military career – ending with his mortal wounding at Fredericksburg.
The image is mounted to a typical card with gold bordering and is labeled “Gen. Byard.” in inked handwriting that matches the writing on the reverse. On the reverse is written in ink “Presented to Miss Cecilia Yoder by her Brother D.K. Yoder, from Catlet Station Sunday September 27th 1863, from Army of the Potomac”.
The only match for the initials among the records of the Army of the Potomac is David King Yoder. He was born in Westmoreland County, PA and enlisted at 26 years old on 9/4/1861 in the 3rd Pennsylvania Infantry. David’s term of enlisted was only three months, and at its end, he enlisted in the 1st Maryland Cavalry – with some records mentioning a brief involvement with the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry before his change of state and service branch. He mustered out on 8/8/1865.
Further penciled notations (not David’s) read “Catlett’s Station Va. Aug 21, 22 / Oct. 24 1862 / Jan 10, 1863 / 16 Sept. 1863 A of P crossed the Rappahannock & took position near Culpepper Court House. Federal engineers repaired a bridge across Cedar Run, near Catlett’s Station destroyed the previous day, Oct. 13 by Confederates. Millers IV 118-19”.
A multi-layered CDV for the selective collector. [cm] [ph:L]
