General Hurlbut was as controversial as they come.  Using a well-connected network to further his career, he went on to Corps command and eventually overall command of the Department of the Gulf.  After the war, he faced prosecution for the mistreatment of POW’s, corruption, and drunkenness – apparently well-founded claims.  He died in the early 1880’s while serving as Ambassador to Peru.  For the veteran inclined, Hurlbut was the first Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic.

This carte-de-visite is in good condition, with the image and mounting card with gold bordering showing sharp edges and corners. The reverse is marked “139 – A D N” in ink, and “Gen Hurlburt / Dept. of Gulf / 1st GAR CO.”  in pencil.  A photographer back mark reads E & H.T. ANTHONY, 501 Broadway, New York / FROM PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE in BRADY’S National Portrait Gallery.  Some very light staining is noted in small areas on the reverse side, mostly to the right.

Overall, a very rare image.  Ideal for the collection that needs some of the relatively obscure faces of the Civil War.   [cm] [ph:L]
