This uncommonly seen image features General Greely Stevenson surrounded by seated and standing members of his staff. Shortly after rising to the role of Division Commander, General Stevenson was shot through the head while resting under a tree during the Battle of Spotsylvania.
The image is mounted to a plain card and the Carte-de-Visite is in a nice condition overall. The reverse is clean, with a penciled label reading “Colonel Thomas Greely Stevenson & Staff / 24th Regiment MVM. A plain-text photographer back mark reads “Photographed by BLACK, 173 Washington Street, Boston.” An older, penciled price reads “$175”.
A rare image of an often-unsung US commander – a striking CDV for the Civil War collector. [cm] [ph:L]
