William was 38 years old when he enlisted at New York City and was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel on 5/27/1861. Unfortunately, his term of service and his life were cut short by disease on 1/6/1862 while still in New York City.
He was also commissioned into Field & Staff New York 55th Militia at some point prior, a majority-French state guard unit.
The image is mounted to a blank card with strong edges and corners, save for some minor denting at the lower left (front) corner of the card. No staining or foxing of the paper is noted and the image is nicely contrasted. The reverse is clean and features a stylized photographer back mark reading “PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTISTS J. GURNEY & SON, 701 BROADWAY, N.Y.” and a penciled label with William’s name and unit, along with old catalogue numbers. [cm][ph:L]
