Thomas was a resident of Oxford and a 23-year-old student when he enlisted on 9/3/1862 as a Captain. He was commissioned into Company G of the 51st Massachusetts Infantry on 9/30/1862 and was with the 51st until the end of their term of service, mustering out on 7/27/1863. Just a few days later, he was commissioned a Captain once again, this time into Company A of the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. Records show a promotion to the rank of Major but he apparently never mustered at that rank. He mustered out in Wilmington, NC on 9/3/1865.
His carte-de-visite image is mounted to a plain card with only very light wear to areas of the corners and edges. The reverse features a penciled “Thomas D. Kimball” and a photographer back mark reading “Photographed by CLAFLIN, 188 Main St. Worchester.”
A handsome photograph of a young officer who fought his way across the Carolinas in two branches of service. A neat and worthy addition to a collection of Civil War images. [cm][ph:L]
