This is a post-war photograph of John Fletcher Cundiff in civilian clothes. He was a 28-year-old farmer from Chamblissburg, Bedford County, VA, when he enlisted on 5/11/1861 at Liberty, Virginia, as a Private in Company A "Clay Troop", 2nd Virginia Cavalry. He was discharged for disability on 12/10/1861 at Liberty, VA. Listed as absent, sick 8/22/1861.

Son of Christopher Cundiff and Jane Echols; brother of Mary Jane (1822 - 1880), Marion Marcella (~1823 - ?), Annie E. (1823 - 1880), Sarah Ann (~1823 - 1890), George McKendred (1826 - 1901), Rebecca V. (~1830 - ?), Isaac Olin (1834 - 1924), Marcella (1835 - 1835), Richard W. (!837 - 1853), William (1840 - 1853).

Enlisted on 5/11/1861 at Liberty, VA, he traveled 25 miles to Lynchburg, VA, where on 5/13/1861 he was mustered into Captain William R. Terry's Company, Mounted Rangers, 30th Virginia Volunteers, as a Private; horse valued at $75, equipments $20. (The regiment was subsequently named 2nd Virginia Cavalry, while the company became Company A.) The 2nd Cavalry Regiment completed its organization at Lynchburg, Virginia, in May, 1861. Its companies were recruited in the counties of Bedford, Campbell, Botetourt, Amherst, Franklin, Appomattox, and Albemarle.

A decent image of Cundiff with good mustache. Ink identification on bottom edge of mount under photo. Plain mount with rounded corners. Top, right corner is chipped and missing. Back mark is A.H. Plecker, Lynchburg, VA.  [jet][ph:L]
