[Commonly misidentified as Robert Brooke Garnett]. The first general officer on either side to fall during the Civil War.
Back-mark: “Bendann Brothers Galleries / Balto. St.” Pre-war image of Major Garnett, USA—standing pose in full dress uniform w/epaulettes, carrying carrying sword on right arm., wearing gloves. Image slightly faded, else VG.
Born in 1819, Garnett was a cousin of Richard B. Garnett and an 1841 West Point Graduate. He was twice brevetted for gallantry in the Mexican War and was one of the more accomplished officer of the old Army when he resigned his commission in 1861 to enter the service of the Confederacy.
Appointed Brigadier General he was sent to take command in North West Virginia at Rich Mountain. Compelled to evacuate his position, closely pursued by troops under McClellan, he was mortally wounded while supervising a skirmish line near the Cheat River, July 13, 1861. Unlike his cousin who was Killed during Gettysburg’s Pickett’s Charge, his body fell into the hands of the enemy but was returned but was returned at the family.
Solid collectible, as R.S. Garnett was the first general officer to fall in the war. In protective sleeve. [ad] [ph:L]
