A fine outdoor image of this captain sitting on a small barrel in camp. Wall tents are visible in the background.

Carswell McClellan is in his officer’s uniform with his sword across his leg and holding a large pipe in hand.

Image is clear with the contrast being just slightly light. Photo is on a typical double-ruled mount.

A terrific ink inscription is on the back, “Compliments of / Cars McClellan. / Capt. & A.A.F. / Actg. A.D.C. Hd. Qrs. A. of P. / Dec. 1863.” There is a small photographer’s backmark printed in gold which is hard to read due to the bold inscription, “GARDNER / Washington, DC”.

Carswell McClellan (a cousin of Gen. George McClellan) was born in Philadelphia, Dec. 3, 1835. He was graduated from Williams College, 1855; served in the Civil War as assistant Adjutant-General, 1st Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac; civil engineer on western railroads, residing in St. Paul; published, "Personal Memoirs and Military History of U. S. Grant versus the Records of the Army of the Potomac." Carswell McClellan, at 24 years old enlisted on 5/7/1862 at New York City as a 2nd Lieutenant. On 5/7/1862 he was commissioned into Company "K" 32nd New York Infantry. He was discharged for promotion on 10/1/1862 and commissioned into US Volunteers Adjutant General Department. He was discharged on 11/1/1864. Promotions: Captain 10/1/1862 (Captain & Asst Adjutant General), Major 3/13/1865 by Brevet, Lt. Colonel 3/13/1865 by Brevet. Died in St. Paul, Minn., March 6, 1892.  [jet] [ph:L]
