This carte-de-visite image was taken in late 1864 and features a young Sergeant Henry Entriken, the 4^th of the 6 color bearers of the 49^th Pennsylvania.  He served in this honored position from September of 1864 until late October of 1864, when the tattered flag shown in this photo was retired and replaced.  He sports a rare NCO belt, issue trousers with NCO stripes, and what appears to be a privately-purchased variety of sack coat with a possible double-breast.

The image is in an interesting overall condition – having been saturated by an unknown substance or was perhaps mounted to the card while still wet with too much Sodium Thiosulphate, resulting in a penetrating yellow-brown finish. Though rare, a published version of this image shows a similar condition.  The card has been trimmed to the edges of the image on all but one side as shown.  The cuts bring the dimensions to 3.5” x 2.35”.  Remaining edges and corners are sharp, with slight wear to the image itself at the low left corner. The reverse shows the same browned coloring, with the heaviest discoloration and spot wear visible at the top edge.  A partial 2-cent stamp is affixed to the reverse, just above the partial photographer’s back mark.  It reads, in part; “CARTES DE VISITE / EDWARD P. H[???] / 820 Arch Street / PHILADELPHIA / SKYLIGHT ON / [2^nd?] FLOOR.” Penciled notations read “color sgt Henry Entriken 49^th Pa Vols”.  Period ink script is partially legible near the bottom edge of the reverse.
