Ben McColloch has quite the impressive career as a personal and professional Texan – serving as a Ranger, fighting with the Republic of Texas, and reaching positions of political power. He served in the US Army and eventually became one of the more prominent early Confederate commanders of the western theater. He was killed at the Battle of Pea Ridge on March 7, 1862, when he was shot from his horse while scouting US defensive positions.
The image features Ben in a bust portrait view, wearing a suit similar to the one he wore when killed (he had an aversion to uniforms and bucked the regulations with a tailored, black suit). The image is mounted to a common card with double gold border pattern. Edges and corners are sharp and surface is free of staining. A penciled label notes his name, while the original printed text label misspells his name as “Ben McCullough”. The photographer is listed a “Published by E. Anthony 501 Broadway, N. Y.” The reverse is clean with a penciled “32” at top left.
A rare carte-de-visite for the collector of fine Civil War images. [cm] [ph:L]
