The reverse shows localized staining and a penciled notation reading, “Capt Andrew Cowan / 1st N. Y. Independent Battery, 6th Corps Artillery Brigade”. A photographer’s back mark reads “Photographed by J. P. VAIL, Palmyra, N. Y. / All negatives preserved; duplicates can be had at any time.” Dimensions are 2.4” x 3.95”.
