Lafayette McLaws is one of the more controversial figures of the senior command of the Army of Northern Virginia – famously running afoul of General Longstreet to the tune of a Court Marshall for “inefficiency”. Whether deserved or not, McLaws’ division was among the hardest fighting in the Confederacy. His division stormed through some of Gettysburg’s most famous locales on July 2nd in an attempt to dislodge US troops and saw action in most major battles of the Civil War’s Eastern Theater before his reprimand and transfer to the deeper south. His resistance against Sherman’s March was ineffective and his new command surrendered with Johnston in May of 1865.
The image is mounted to a common card with double-gold border patterning. Very slight corner wear is noted at low left and right, as well as upper right. “McLaws” is penciled across the bottom of the image. The reverse is clean, with another penciled “McLaws” across the top. An E.A. Anthony photographer’s back mark is partially obscured by a canceled stamp, dated “AUG 26 1865.”
A very desirable image for the Civil War collector. [cm] [ph:L]
