Allegheny Johnson’s nickname was earned during the early 1861 campaigns in Western Virginia and is among the most recognizable of the war. He famously reconnoitered Culp’s Hill on the evening of July 1st, but did not issue orders for his command to attack. The decision made him a veritable fixture within the controversies of Gettysburg’s first day.
The image features a bust view of Johnson and is mounted to a common card with a double gilt border pattern. The card and image are clean, with only light edge wear. “Ed Johnson” is penciled across the lower edge of the photo. The reverse is clean with another penciled “Ed Johnson”. A cancelled stamp is dated AUG 26 1865 and obscures an E. A. Anthony back mark.
An important and rare carte-de-visite for the collector of fine images. [cm] [ph:L]
