Roger Hanson was a former US military officer who eventually commanded the “Orphan Brigade” – sons of Kentucky who could not return while fighting for the Confederacy due to the state staying in the Union. Roger was mortally wounded at Stones River during the assaults of January 2nd, and died on January 4th, 1863.
This very rare image features a standing view of Hanson and is mounted to a common card with linear gilt border patterns. Wear is noted along the right edge of the image in the form of a small tear and surface wear from prior adhesion to something. “Roger Hanson” is penciled across the bottom of the card. The reverse features a penciled “Roger Hanson” along the top edge, and a cancelled stamp dated “AUG 26 1865” – which partially obscures an E. A. Anthony photographer back mark.
This is quite the carte-de-visite for the discerning collector of Civil War photography. [cm] [ph:L]
