Benjamin McCulloch was a US Army Major and professional Texan – holding positions of political power in the state, serving as a Texas Ranger, and fighting as a soldier of the Republic of Texas.  He eventually rose to the Confederate rank of Brigadier General and was killed at Pea Ridge in 1862 when he was shot from his saddle while reconnoitering US defensive positions. Characteristically contemptuous of uniforms, he was killed wearing a civilian suit similar to that sported in this portrait – likely the very same one.

The image is mounted to a plain card and shows excellent contrast. The reverse is clean with a photographer back mark at center reading “Charles D. Fredricks & Co., / “Specialite,” / 587 Broadway, New York.”  Written in pencil is are the notations; “Killed in Battle / Pea Ridge / attire at time of death. / Ben McCollouch”

A very uncommon carte-de-visite for the discerning Civil War image collector. [cm] [ph:L]
