Franklin Gardner was one of many career-level US Military Officer who sided with the Confederacy at the outset of the Civil War. He vegan his southern military career as a Captain, and eventually commanded the defenses at Port Hudson, inflicting 47 days-worth of losses on besieging Federal Troops.
The image features a bust-view portrait of Gardner, and is mounted to a common card with gilt border patterning. “Gardner” is penciled across the low edge of the photograph. The card shows a very light wrinkle at low right. The reverse is clean, with “Gardner” written across the top edge, a canceled stamp dated “AUG 26 1865”, and a partial E. & H. T. ANTHONY photographer back mark.
A very uncommon carte-de-visite for the collector of Confederate war photography. [cm] [ph:L]
