Duke has had lasting influence as a historian who recounted the Confederate experience. As a historian, he helped to found the Filson Club in Louisville, Kentucky, and started efforts to preserve the Shiloh battlefield. He wrote numerous books and magazine articles, most notably in the Southern Bivouac. During the Civil War, he rose to the rank of Brigadier General and second-in-command of John Hunt Morgan’s force, eventually replacing his brother-in-law after he was killed by US troops.
The image features a bust-view portrait of Duke, mounted to a common card with gilt line border patterning. Edges and corners are sharp and crisp, with only a miniscule spot of rolling at low left. A penciled notation, written across the bottom of the image, reads “Bazil Duke”. The reverse is clean with a second penciled “Duke” across the top, a partial stamp with an “AUG 26 1865” cancellation, and part of an E. & H. T. ANTHONY photographer back mark. The lower portion of the back mark suffers from surface material loss.
A scarce carte-de-visite image for the discerning fine image collector. [cm] [ph:L]
