Oval waist-up view of Jewell in uniform. He wears a military vest, a single-breasted jacket, and a kepi on his head. The image is clear with good contrast. Photographer's backmark, Anderson & Turner, New Orleans. There is a 2-cent revenue stamp on the back.

Identified as Walter L. Jewell, Company E, 14th Louisiana Infantry. Pictured in "Portraits of Conflict, Louisiana" on page 58.

Walter L. Jewell enlisted on June 25, 1861 at New Orleans as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company E, 14th Louisiana Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on December 2, 1861. Jewell was severely wounded at the Battle of 2nd Manassas. He went to Richmond without leave, probably to recuperate. He remained absent without leave and was finally dropped from the regiments rolls on March 2, 1863.

From the collection of the late William Turner.  [jet] [PH:L]
