Seated studio view of Old in uniform. He is wearing a rather plain uniform; what appears to be a 4-button frock and trousers with a stripe down the leg. He holds a hat in his lap. Mount has had the top corners trimmed. Period ink signature on back, “Very truly, Yr. friend, Wm. W. Old. Va.” Photographer’s backmark, Anderson & Co’s, Richmond, Va.

Wm. Old’s military history is somewhat confusing; he enlisted in July 1861 as “3rd Lieutenant” in Company G, 59th VA Infantry. In March 1862 he was mustered into Company B, of the 20th Battalion, VA Heavy Artillery (Richmond Defenses). He was wounded on June 1, 1862 at Seven Pines. Commissioned Captain and Asst. Quarter Master in “Battery 9” (Richmond Defenses) in August 1862. He also served on staffs of General Johnson and General Early. He died in 1911.

From the William Turner collection.  [jet] [ph:L]
