Image shows a mustached soldier wearing a dark frock coat with a small stripped bowtie.

Image contrast is good. Paper and mount have light surface dirt. Lower left corner of paper slightly separated from mount.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for ADDIS GALLERY… WASHINGTON, D.C. with the added note of P. B. MARVIN, PHOTOGRAPHER.

Modern pencil inscription on back identifies the image as that of Sgt. Lorenzo D. BARRELLl of Co. E, 2nd New York Heavy Artillery. A search of the regimental roster finds a Lorenzo D. BARNELL in Company E. Records show that Barnell was 28 years old when he enlisted as a Private on October 2, 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant the same day and was killed in action at Petersburg on June 18, 1864. The New York Adjutant General also carries his name as BARRELL.  [ad][ph:L]
