Bust view of DeShields in civilian clothes. Image is clear with good contrast. Pencil signature on back, as well as modern collector notes. Photographer’s backmark, G.W. Minnis, Richmond, Va.

Henry DeShields was born on 4/11/1832 in Northumberland County, Virginia. Attended University of Virginia and was a lawyer and insurance agent. He practiced in Baltimore until the Civil War. He returned to Virginia and enlisted in the Northumberland Rifles (40th Virginia Infantry) in May of 1861. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in May 1861 and made regimental quartermaster. Promoted to Captain in January 1862 and Major by May 1862. He died on 10/16/1884.
