Seated studio view of Johnston in civilian clothes. He wears a dark vest and coat as well as a very dapper hat. Image is clear with very good contrast. Period ink signature on bottom edge of mount under image, “Maj. J.W. Johnston Poltonsburg [?]”. Photographer’s backmark, G.W. Minnis, Richmond, VA.
Enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant and promoted to rank of Major. He was the son of General Joseph Johnston.
