This trimmed carte-de-visite features a bust portrait of 2nd Lieutenant Harry Montgomery, a veteran of the 11th US Infantry – turned Veteran Reserve Corps Junior Officer. Harry’s regiment, the 16th V.R.C., was organized at Harrisburg in October of 1863 from numerous companies and battalions of the Invalid Corps and remained in service until late November of 1865.
Plainly visible in the photograph is his officer’s frock in characteristic sky-blue kersey with a velvet-trimmed collar and matching cravat.
The image is mounted to a card, both of which have been trimmed at the upper corners and the lower edge. The reverse is clean, with a “FARIS, PHOTOGRAPHER / 751 Broadway / NEW YORK.” back mark at center. Just below, Harry wrote “Yours very truly, Harry Montgomery / V.R.C. / U.S.A.” Dimensions are 2.4” x 3.3”.
An uncommon but essential variety of Civil War image for the comprehensive collector. [cm][ph:L]
