Thomas Curry lived in Rushville when he enlisted on 10/7/1862 as a First Lieutenant. On that same day, he was commissioned into Company C of the 119th Illinois Infantry. He was promoted to Captain of Company C on 12/1/1863 and maintained that rank for the remainder of his term. He served through all major campaigns and battles in which the regiment participated, mustering out on 8/6/1865 at Mobile, Alabama. He was an active member of GAR Post # 455 (Alexander Simpson) in Carthage, IL and died on 2/8/1898.
Thomas’ image is mounted to a common card with gilt border patterning. A date is written in oxidized ink across the top reading “Dec 4 1863” and at bottom is written “Lt. Thomas J. Curry Co “C” 119th Il. Vo.” Some light chipping of the lower edge of the card around the signature is noted but only obscures small portions of a few letters. The reverse is entirely blank and mostly clean, save for a few spots of very light surface soot and localized, mild foxing.
An excellent, identified Civil War officer – ideal for the collector of fine images or Illinois pieces. [cm][ph:L]
