Offered here is a fine cdv photograph of four Federal artillery officers by Marken of Frederick, Maryland. Photograph is in fine condition with good tone, contrast, and focus. Clean mount with blue rules. Simple printed photographer’s backmark. Interesting details include, “Russian” shoulder knots, cigars, and crossed cannon insignia.

One of the Civil War’s better-known stories is the capture of Union artillery by the 226-strong corps of cadets from Virginia Military Institute at the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. Far less remembered is that the artillery belonged to the 30th New York Independent Battery, commanded by Capt. Alfred August Von Kleiser.

Capt. Alfred August Von Kleiser is seated here in this image on the left. The first lieutenant standing on the right is Conrad Carolin, who also served in the 30th. The other two men remain unidentified. These two are identified by Ron Coddington via an additional copy of this same image with inscription on back.

At New Market, von Kleiser’s 150-man battery of six Napoleons found itself in the middle of heavy fighting. One gun became disabled and had to be abandoned. Von Kleiser relocated to a new position in the vicinity of the Bushong House. Here a second gun from von Kleiser’s battery, which had been disabled by enemy artillery was abandoned and “captured” by the VMI cadets. [jet][ph:L]
