Offered is a rare carte-de-visite of Lt. Colonel Dr. Adam Neill McLaren (1805–1874), a prominent career medical officer and surgeon in the United States Regular Army who served through multiple American conflicts, including the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War, and the American Civil War.  McLaren is credited as serving longer in the US Medical Corps than any other doctor or surgeon. Appointed as an Army assistant surgeon in 1833, he was promoted to Major and full Surgeon in 1839. During the Mexican-American War, he served as a senior medical officer in General William J. Worth's division and established vital, temporary general hospitals in the field.

By the outbreak of the Civil War, McLaren was one of the most senior Surgeons in the Regular Army. He served as the President of the Medical Examining Board and was placed in charge of major military medical facilities, including the Union Hotel Hospital in Georgetown.  He is noted in medical histories for bringing young assistant and contract surgeons into the fold—such as the famous future medical pioneer John Shaw Billings—and providing them with early surgical commands during the war's initial influx of wounded troops.

Adam’s image is loosely held in an original, paper album mounting page and labeled at bottom, “Dr. A. N. McLaren / Surgeon Mass 23rd Reg. Died in Boston. / 1876.”  The image is in very good condition, given what is visible within the frame. The reverse of the image is visible through the rounded window and reads “WHIPPLE, 297 Washington Street, Boston.” – with information about obtaining copies printed at bottom. The low edge of the reverse of the album page is labeled “Major Henry L. Abbott”.  The album mounting page measures 4.8” x 5.9” and the CDV card appears untrimmed (roughly standard size).  Detailed scans of much of his Civil War correspondence are included as part of a large record file to accompany the photograph.
