This carte-de-visite image features a standing post-war portrait of Lieutenant John Avery, a previous member of Company K of the 3rd Louisiana European Infantry (differing from the 3rd LA Infantry).  It shows good contrast and is mounted to a common card with gold line bordering.  A spot of blue ink obscures what was likely his tie knot. The reverse is clean, with the penciled signature “J. M. Avery – 1866” at top, and later penciled notations scattered as shown.  A photographer back mark at center reads “J. A. SHELDON, / 101 Canal Street. / NEW ORLEANS.”  Edges and corners are sharp, save for light wear to the lower left corner.  Because records for the European Brigade are scant, deeper research will be needed to determine his date of enlistment and the date of disbandment for his regiment.

Formed in early 1862, this regiment was part of the European Brigade—a unique force comprised largely of foreign-born residents, expatriates, and European immigrants living in New Orleans who organized to defend the city. The European Brigade subsequently rendered their most crucial service in the early spring of 1862. When regular Confederate forces were pulled out to reinforce other theaters, the mayor of New Orleans placed the city in the charge of these foreign brigades to repress thugs, prevent riots, and maintain order before Federal troops under General Benjamin Butler occupied the city. Following the Federal capture of New Orleans in late April 1862, much of the Louisiana Militia dissolved or was reorganized outside of Union-occupied territory.

A rare link to an obscure facet of the Civil War.  [cm] [ph:L]
