John Ericsson was a brilliant Swedish-American mechanical engineer and inventor whose technological breakthroughs revolutionized 19th-century naval warfare and maritime travel. He is most famous for designing the revolutionary ironclad warship USS Monitor during the American Civil War and perfecting the marine screw propeller, which remains the primary method of modern ship propulsion.

This rare carte-de-visite image is mounted to a plain card with copyright information at bottom which dates the image to 1862. The reverse is clean, with a penciled “Capt Ericsson” at top, and “Charles D. Fredricks & Co. / “Specialite” / 587 Broadway, New York” stamped at center.  A slight tear and crease are noted at the bottom edge and shown.

A very neat image to expand any comprehensive Civil War or Naval image collection.  [cm] [ph:L]
