William Hardee was a career U.S. Army officer and a prominent Confederate corps commander during the American Civil War. Nicknamed "Old Reliable" for his tactical dependability, he is most famous for writing the definitive infantry drill manual used by both the Union and Confederate armies.
This etched carte-de-visite portrait of William Hardee is mounted to a plain card. Edges and corners are sharp and front face is free of overt damage. The reverse shows some staining and discoloration but remains otherwise clean. Text at center identifies the subject as “Gen. Hardee, C. S. A.”
