Offered here is a fine carte de viste (cdv) of Searl in plain uniform clothes. Full standing studio view with Searl resting one hand on a chair. A kepi rests upon the seat of the chair while Searl wears a four-button sack coat, dark military vest, and dark trousers. Reuben Searl sports a delicate moustache.

Pencil identification on back along with “JNO. HOLYLAND / WASHINGTON, D.C.” photographer’s backmark. Condition is very good overall with complete mount.

Reuben Stedman Searl (spelled Searle in Civil War records) was from Southampton, MA, and was an 18-year-old farmer when he enlisted on 8/8/1862 as a Private in Company “D” 37th Massachusetts Infantry. This regiment was part of the 6th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. He was Mustered Out on 6/21/1865 at Washington, DC.

Reuben Searl died on March 12, 1921, in Kansas City, Missouri and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, Kansas.  [jet] [ph:L]
