This is a carte de visite (cdv) photograph of Edwin Likens in uniform. This is a full standing studio view with Likens posed between a curtain and a chair. He wears his fatigue jacket with shoulder straps. He wears his forage cap on his head with infantry horn insignia is visible.

A ruled mount with photographer’s backmark is printed on the back: Brady’s, New York.

Edwin S. Likens poses for this carte de visite by Mathew Brady of New York. Likens started the war as a Second Lieutenant in the 115th Pennsylvania Infantry, but resigned his commission in the November of 1862. "I do not feel competent to fill my position," he explained in his letter of resignation. He returned to the army in the summer of 1863 as a Captain in the 20th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia, organized during Lee’s invasion of the North. He later served in two New York regiments, the 132nd and 99th. He died of disease on July 20, 1865, while on duty in the latter regiment.

Photograph shows a very slight silhouette from once being in a cdv album, but otherwise remains in very nice condition. [jet] [ph:L]
