This carte-de-visite image features Captain Amos F. Gillis in a portrait view, while the reverse features the late officer’s signature.  The mounting card has strong edges and corners with a double-line gilt border pattern on the front face. The reverse is signed in ink by Amos as “Amos F. Gillis / Capt. Co. “B” / 23 O. V. V. I.”  A photographer’s back mark reads “F. L. LeRoy, WARREN, O. / Negative Preserved.”  Notations about the Captain are written in pencil and should be carefully removable if so chosen.

Amos enlisted on 6/2/1861 as a Private in Company B of the 23rd Ohio.  By 7/1/1864 he had risen to the rank of Captain of Company B – not long before he was killed in action at Berryville, Virginia on 9/3/1864.  Amos’ regularly wrote tenderly to his wife and daughter, frequently ending with the line “…and a kiss for Little May.”  His letters have been preserved in the Ohio State Archives and published as a singular volume under the title “And a Kiss for Little May”.  He is buried in the Winchester National Cemetery.

A haunting remnant of a devoted US officer from Ohio.  Ideal for the fine Civil War, Ohio, or Killed in Action/Memorial collector.  [cm] [ph:L]
