This Carte de Visite (CDV) photograph of Krause is a three-quarter standing studio view of him in uniform with sword. Unusual in that he has only the oak leaves sewn on the shoulder instead of the whole shoulder strap. Clarity and contrast is fine. Image is on a typical, double-ruled mount. The corners, and top and bottom edges are very slightly trimmed. Signed in brown ink at bottom of front, and again on the back. Cook & Newberry, Rock Island, Illinois, backmark with three cent revenue stamp. Back shows subtle linear staining from waxed scrap album page.

Major Andrew J. Krause was a white officer who served in the Union Army during the Civil War, most notably commanding the 108th United States Colored Troops (USCT). The 108th U.S. Colored Infantry was organized in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 20, 1864. It was composed predominantly of formerly enslaved Black men from Kentucky. Under Major Krause, the 108th USCT performed garrison duties serving as guards at the Rock Island Prison Barracks in Illinois from September 1864 to May 1865, where they guarded Confederate prisoners of war. After the prison camp closed, Krause and the regiment were transferred to the Department of Mississippi and the Gulf for Reconstruction occupation duty before finally mustering out on March 21, 1866. Andrew J. Krause was born in 1843 in Pennsylvania, and died in 1899 in Texas. He is buried in Pecan Grove Cemetery, McKinney, Texas.  [jet] [ph:L]
