Full-standing studio view wearing military frock and trousers. Other than a stripe on his trousers other uniform details are difficult to see. Officer's kepi on table next to him. Image is clear with poor contrast. Image is mounted on thick card stock, not usual cdv mount. No photographer's backmark. Pencil notes on back. Image taken while Walton was recruiting in Mobile in February 1863.

James Burdge Walton enlisted as a Major on March 26, 1861 in the Washington Artillery. He was promoted to Colonel in March 1862; made Chief of Artillery, Army of the Potomac, November 1862; Chief of Artillery Longstreet's Corps; appointed Inspector General of Artillery; recommended twice for promotion to Brigadier General by Beauregard and Longstreet; resigned July 8, 1864.
