This is fine carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Lieutenant Theodore Stanford Garnett, Jr. This is a chest-up view of Garnett in uniform. Image is clear with good contrast. The image is pasted on to a typical ruled mount; untrimmed. Written in brown ink across the bottom is, “Very Truly your friend Theo. S. Garnett, Jr. Hd Qrt. Cav. Div. A.N.V.” On the back side are two red, one-cent Revenue stamps and a Vannerson & Jones, Richmond photographer’s imprint.
Theodore Stanford Garnett was born 10/28/1844 in Richmond, VA. He enlisted on 5/15/1863 as a Private in Company “F” of the 9th Virginia Cavalry. He became a clerk-courier assigned to the headquarters of the cavalry general, J.E.B. Stuart. He competently performed his duties, making a fine impression, and on January 27, 1864 Stuart recommended "Private Theodore S. Garnett, Jr, Co. F 9th Va Cav, for appointment as 1st Lieut. and Aide-de-Camp, to be assigned to duty on [his] staff." He served in this function until Stuart was mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern, Virginia. Garnett played a central role in the transfer of the dying general to Richmond and was in attendance at his subsequent burial. He continued in the service of the Confederacy serving on the staffs of Generals W.H.F. Lee and William Paul Roberts. When the war ended in 1865, Garnett attended the University of Virginia studying law. He died 4/27/1915 in Norfolk, Virginia and is buried in Ellwood Cemetery.
