Offered here is a rare carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Howard H. Zacharie in zouave uniform. Unfortunately, this is only a bust view, as it would be interesting to see his complete uniform. As it is, we see him in a dark color, single-breasted coat and wearing an elaborate zouave style kepi. Plain image pasted to a plain, untrimmed mount. Two pencil identifications are on front. Additional pencil notes are found on the back. Photographer’s backmark is from S. Anderson’s Studio, New Orleans. This image comes through the Bill Turner/Ray Richie collections.
Howard Henderson Zacharie was a Captain in the Confederate Army, and served as A. A. G. on General Major’s staff in the Department of Texas, New Mexico & Arizona. His obituary from August 16, 1865, reads: “The announcement of the death of Howard H. Zacharie, son of our esteemed old fellow-citizen, J. W. Zacharie, will be painful news to a host of friends in and out of this city. He died at the early age of 31, and had just returned home. He had distinguished himself in Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas during the late war, as Adjutant to Gen. Major, late C. S. A., commanding a brigade and then a division of Texas cavalry. His amiable qualities and polished manners made him friends wherever he went. It was a hard fate to come home only to die, and to die so young.” He was born June 15, 1834 in New Orleans and died on August 13, 1865. He is buried in Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana.
