Seated studio view of an older black woman with a small baby in her lap. She wears a nice print dress, an apron, a brooch at the collar, and her head wrapped. A fashionable hat sits on the table next to her. Image is clear with very good contrast. Mount has photographer's information along bottom edge on front and a large backmark, Lara, Nassau, New Providence. Period pencil on back: "Bella Carter held by Hester, 1872."

Image is from the late William Turner collection.  [jet] [ph:L]
