Carte de visite of a possible Confederate soldier. Oval bust view. The gentleman wears a civilian overcoat and what appears to be a military vest. Image is clear with very good contrast. "A. Langley" written in pencil at top and in ink at bottom of image. Twelve Confederate possibilities; only one from Louisiana. No photographer's backmark.

A message likely written to a young woman friend is on the back: "I think this would appear to better advantage on a very dark night, and as you can not always have night, I pray you keep it in a dark place. If there are any children in the neighborhood by all means keep it covered. Have lives sometimes been turned white in a single night by sudden fears."

From the late William Turner collection. [jet] [ph:L]
