Renowned for its setting and combination of architectural beauty and engineering prowess, the Fairmount Water Works was a large industrial project that used pumps to raise water from the Schuylkill River into reservoirs that could supply the city of Philadelphia. Constructed with a Classical Revival exterior along the river, the facility became a tourist attraction, visited even by Charles Dickens during his American tour. The photograph has good tones and lots of detail. The card has a slight discoloration at the right edge and was trimmed slightly along the left, but neither affect the image. The trimming just clipped a letter or two from the inscription on the reverse in period ink that reads, “Fairmount Water Works Phi[la.]/ South Front.” The card is also inscribed as present, “Compliments of…,” but the signature has defied our efforts at identifying the donor. Decommissioned in the early 1900s, the Water Works still stand below the Philadelphia Museum of Art and are being revived as a tourist attraction and events venue.  [sr] [PH:L]
