This unknown subject has chosen a rather odd pose. He sits on the back, top rail of a chair next to a table on which is an ornate mantel clock with his saber between his legs and a small white dog lying on the floor by the chair.

The subject wears the 1858 dress hat complete with plume and crossed cannons insignia. At center of the crossed cannons is a blank medallion. The subject also wears a dark double-breasted frock coat and matching trousers. The coat has either major’s or lieutenant colonel’s shoulder straps along with two unknown medals on the left chest and a watch chain extending down from an upper button to his waist. The subject wears a sash across his chest as one would when serving as Officer of the Day, with another around his waist under his sword belt. Between his legs is a Model 1860 cavalry saber in the scabbard. His little dog, which looks like a small poodle, lies on the floor behind him by the legs of the chair he is leaning on.

Contrast and clarity is good though a bit grainy in appearance. Mount and paper are good. Bottom front of the mount is marked BRADY & CO….WASHINGTON.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint of M. B. BRADY & CO… WASHINGTON, D.C. & NEW YORK. There is a name on the back that looks like “MANSEN” and it is written in a decidedly European fashion of script. There is also some collector information at bottom.

Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner.  [ad] [ph:L]
