CDV is a three-quarter seated view of a Confederate artilleryman. He wears a medium-colored shell jacket and light trousers. The jacket has an eight button with wooden buttons. The collar, cuff piping and epaulette piping are tinted red by the photographer. There is also a red stripe down the leg of the trousers. The subject is seated by a table on which his kepi rests. The cap has a red band around the base and a red disc on the crown. There is an artillery insignia attached to the front.
Contrast and clarity are excellent. Mount and paper are good. Bottom center of mount has a period pencil notation that reads “MY OWN DEAR COUSIN HENRY.”
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for G. W. MINNIS… RICHMOND, VA. There is also a green 2 cent tax stamp.
Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner who has penciled an ID on the reverse of Jessie I. Davidson VMI but no record of such could be found. [ad] [PH:L]
