CDV is of a clean shaven, fair-haired young man wearing a double-breasted frock coat with the two parallel bars of a 1st lieutenant visible on his collar.

Image has good clarity and contrast. The paper shows two small spots of oxidation around the edge but the mount is very good.

Reverse is blank but for the following period pencil inscription:

THIS WORLD THAT WE LIVE IN

IS THE BEST TO LEND OR TO SPEND IN

BUT TO BEG OR TO BORROW OR GET A MANS OWN

TIS THE VERY WORST WORLD THAT EVER WAS KNOWN

I AM MY DEAR LOVES

YOUR SWEET FRIEND

TOM A. SHER???

With time and persistence the name of the subject might be deciphered.

From the collection of the late William A. Turner.    [ad] [PH:L]
