Full standing view of an unknown Union cavalryman in a rather jaunty pose with one hand on his hip and with the other he leans on his drawn saber. He is dressed in an issue Cavalry shell jacket that is open at the center exposing a white handkerchief and there are shoulder scales attached on either side of the collar. Our subject also wears light trousers, knee-high boots with spurs, gauntlets and sword belt with shoulder strap and rectangular belt plate. On his head he wears a kepi with light piping going horizontally around the base and vertically along the front seam.
The back of the photo has no photographer’s imprint but is inscribed in period ink “Camp Fenton, Washington Feb. 18, 62”. A quick internet search shows that in Feb. of 1862 the 9th New York Cavalry was stationed at Camp Fenton in Washington, D.C. Image is in good condition with light dirt from storage and age.
