This Carte-de-Visite image features a young US Artilleryman in a seated pose. Evident on the breast of his enlisted frock is a 22nd Corps badge, with a “1” and an “F” on the disk of his cap – likely making him a member of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, or 1st Maine Heavy Artillery – each of which was transported back to Washington after Lee’s surrender to man the forts in accordance with their initial service directives as Heavy Artillery.
The CDV is in nice condition, with a common gold-bordered mounting card. All edges and corners are sharp and complete and the image is clear with excellent contrast. The reverse shows faint remnants of a penciled notation, with legible portions reading “1st M(?) Heavy Art / Wearing 22nd Corps Badge”. The outline of two stamps is noted below the photographer back mark which reads “PHOTOGRAPHED BY D. W. CURTIS, / Corner High and Bridge Sts. / GEORGETOWN, D. C. / N. B. – The negative of this picture never destroyed, duplicates furnished at any time. No. 46 , 1865”.
A neat link to the hard fought “Heavies” who were instrumental in ending the Civil War’s Virginia theater of operations. [CM] [ph:L]
