Union case was made from a composition of shellac and sawdust compressed to hardness, then imprinted under pressure in molds or dies.
This brass hinged case is in excellent condition. It is done with a light brown finish.
The front is beautifully molded with a raised decoration of Richmond’s Washington monument at center of laurel wreath. At the top corners are excellently detailed angels blowing their trumpets and holding palm branches. The bottom corners have stunning spread-winged eagles with a panoply of flags and shields with a patriotic shield at bottom center.
The reverse has the same decoration minus the monument at center of the wreath.
The case edges have three areas where there is some rubbing and minor amounts of missing material. The rest of the case is excellent. None of the raised decoration is chipped. Ll detail is excellent.
Interior has a brown pillow that shows minor scattered wear. Maker’s label for S. PECK & CO. is also present. [ad] [ph:L]
