CLASSIC NINTH PLATE AMBROTYPE OF A SOUTHERN SOLDIER

$750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 141-113

This waist-up view shows a clean-shaven young soldier wearing a dark forage cap and gray jacket with a dark, solid color collar. Six buttons are visible, though we can’t quite make out the motifs on them. Short, horizontal dark stripes about two thirds of the way down his chest may mark low-set breast pockets. A very narrow string seems draped around his neck and is likely a long watch cord.

There is some very minor solarization at the perimeter, some scattered dark spots and minor wipes. The clarity on the whole is excellent and the soldier seems to stare into the viewer’s eyes with a very calm, neutral expression indicating he is ready for whatever comes. We wonder if he was.

The image comes with glass, mat and frame, and is housed in a full, intact, leatherette case with good hinge and clasp.  [sr]
