This sixth-plate ambrotype is housed in an embossed, leatherette case with a separated hinge, but is matted, glassed, and framed, and the facing pad is place. The image is very clear and shows a Confederate soldier seated from the knees up, wearing a gray jacket with brass buttons and shoulder straps. The jacket is open, revealing a civilian vest, white shirt bosom and part of his necktie. His pants are dark and likely civilian as well. The jacket shows six brass buttons and their spacing indicates the jacket had nine on the front. It follows the general lines of the Richmond Depot Type-II issue jacket with shoulder tabs but no branch of service trim, but we are aware there were close copies made privately and similar issue jackets from other depots.

Given the civilian parts of his dress and rather new looking jacket, our man has likely just signed up, but he does exhibit some authority and chevrons are visible on his sleeve at left. These seem to be made of three lines of light-colored braid. It is possible they are the borders of two broad corporal’s stripes, but there is no significant difference in color from the jacket between them and we think they are rather three narrow chevrons of a sergeant. Our fellow is bearded, looks rather mature, and likely possessed the authority needed for the position. [sr] [ph:L]
