There is no doubt about this Confederate officer’s branch of service or rank. He has adopted the U.S. officer’s 1858 pattern army hat complete with turned-up brim held by an embroidered bullion eagle side plate, hat cord, plume, and an embroidered hunting horn on a jaceron wire bordered patch mounted on the front of his hat to indicate he serves in the infantry. At the same time, he wears a regulation Confederate officer’s frock coat with two rows of seven buttons, sleeve knots, and two bars on his collar showing he is a first lieutenant.

The photographer has touched up the gilt elements of his uniform, which covers some detail of the buttons, but is neatly enough done to show the contours of the hat eagle even viewed at an angle, his infantry horn, etc. His collar bars peek through a bit on the edges, as do some of the buttons. The lower portions of the sleeve braid seem doubled, but the upper portions show he was following the single cord of a lieutenant. For all that, the photographer left alone the officer’s face, and he is clearly shown to be young, clean-shaven, and very serious.

The sixth-plate ambrotype shows him at half-length, resting one elbow on a table to the viewer’s right. The is a narrow band of solarization around the perimeter, but it only touches the figure on his elbow. The case is brown thermoplastic with raised floral and geometric motifs, in good condition with just a few spots of oxidation where the color has lightened or faded a bit. The mat, glass and frame are in place. The outward edges of the frame show some darkening and a little verdigris, but the decorative mat is very good. The floral embossed facing pad is in place with some minor fading.

This is a good, very forthright portrait of a Confederate infantry line officer who would have marched on foot alongside his men and moved among the ranks in battle trying to exercise some sort of control and instill some kind of order amid the chaos and deafening noise. [sr] [ph:m]
